My new computer came! Yay! I don’t have a case for it, for two reasons: First, the case wouldn’t fit into the $200 budget I had for the computer, and second, I’m going to mod this computer into something else. This should be fun.
I have the case for my former stereo, which I’m considering using, and I’m going to go garage saling, and to go TJMaxx and so on, looking for interesting things. One idea is to use one of those flip-top globe-bars. That would certainly be interesting.
Anyway, since I don’t have a case, and I’m certainly not going to wait until I have one to start using the new box, I have this odd assortment of cards and drives and stuff sitting on the desk, all wired up and running. As Janette put it, “It’s hard to believe this is actually a working computer.” If her digital camera had arrived, I’d put up a picture, but it hasn’t yet. I will definitly use it to document my case modding, tho.
There were two issues with getting the new computer running. First, I got it all connected up, and went to turn it on, and discovered I didn’t have a power switch! Power switches for ATX computers (basically anything less than 3 years old) are really just a button on the end of a jumper. You press the button, it closes the jumper. An actual switch (what is on AT cases, which is what all of my free cases are) will not work for an ATX motherboard. We went to CompUSA, but they don’t sell just the buttons. Afterall, the button comes in the case, right? Fortunately, I discovered that one of the reset buttons on one of my AT cases would work (ie, it had the right jumper attached to it). Whew! Computer now boots correctly.
The next issue was with the graphics card. See, there are two different (incompatible) types of AGP cards. The older type runs at 3.3 volts, the newer type runs at 1.5 volts. All of my previous cards are the old type. However, I do have a (relatively) new GeForce card. The card comes in two types, one of which is 3.3 volts, one of which is 1.5 volts. I couldn’t for the life of me discover which one I had. An, if I was 3.3 volts, and I put it in anyway, I could have blown out the motherboard. Not good. Finally, in desperation, I went and looked at the AGP specs, and discovered that they keyed the cards, so that the 3.3 volt cards will not fit in 1.5 volt only slots. My card fit, and booted, and is okay. Whew! That could have been another $100 for a new graphics card.
So, now I have my new computer up and running, and installing Gentoo as I write this, so all is good. I’ll keep you all posted as to the state of my case modding, complete with pictures (once Janette’s camera arrives).
