Mars closeup

As you may or may not know, last night was the closest approach to earth in 60,000 years. Apparently, there were tons of crackpots who thought that mars was going to hit the earth, or was going to be so close that the gravity would cause massive earthquakes. NASA phones were ringing off the hook with people scared the end of the world was near. Well, it was a close call, but mars managed to miss us by a measly 34,647,420 miles. Phew! That was close!

To celebrate this historic event, Janette and I went out and took pictures of mars with her digital camera. Here’s the best we could do:

For compareson’s sake, here’s the Hubble image:

Apparently, Hubble has a slightly better zoom than Janette’s camera.

Freedom (or whatever)

I feel myself somewhat cut adrift.

For the past 10 years or so, I’ve been a Denver fan. Don’t as me why, I’ve just liked Denver for more than any other team. A big part of that was John Elway. I think he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Then, after he retired, they made Griese starter. Now, I loved Griese at U of M, and not just because of the National Championship. He had great presence, and always made the right decisions. He wasn’t a great skill, but he did the right thing so often that he was a great quarterback. So, when Denver picked him up, I was happy, and when he started, I was extatic. Although he had lots of problems at Denver, mostly due to injuries, when he was on the field he did well. Now, he’s gone, and I definitely feel the loss. There’s still some great players that I really like on Denver, such as McCaffery, Sharpe, Portis, Gold, and so on, but it’s somehow not the same. Partly, it’s because of who they picked up: Jake Plummer.

I really don’t like Jake Plummer. Partly, it’s because he hasn’t performed well, even though he’s been hyped. Partly, it’s the stupid “Jake the Snake” nickname. Partly, it’s because he’s been on Arizona, who I also don’t like. But, the end result is that I don’t like Plummer. I’ll still root for Denver when they’re playing, say, the Colts, but I probably won’t root for them over Oakland or the Packers.

This leaves me without “a team”. I’ve never been a Lions fan, and, although I’m moderately interested to see what Mariucci does with the team, I’m not going to start now. I’ve always liked Green Bay (especially Bret Favre), and recently I’ve liked Oakland, but neither of them is “my team”. I’m finally to the place I’ve sort of been heading for the past few years: I like many specific players, and some teams that have more players I like than others, and I dislike specific players and some teams, but I don’t have any particular team to root for week in and week out. Maybe I should take up fantasy football.

All done.

Well, it’s done. I’ve mounted the hard drive and DVD. All that remains is to get a new switch, as the one I’m using now is a huge switch block from one of my old cases, and I have to use the reset switch. That should be really easy, but Radio Shack is closed right now. Maybe I can get some LEDs too, and put the through the case somewhere. Anyway, here are the final pictures:

First, proof that the box does indeed close, even while the computer is running.

And second, the final inside of the case. Note that much of the wire snarl in the upper left comes from the various wires attached to the switch block, and so will not be there when I’ve gotten a new button.

All in all, this mod was quite fun. Seeing as this was my first mod ever, I’m quite pleased with how it came out. I didn’t manage to screw up and destroy the box.

In addition, the mod was cheap. The box was under $20, and the only other thing I had to buy was an adaptor to connect the laptop DVD-ROM to a normal IDE chain, and that was much cheaper than buying a new CD/DVD-ROM for the project. Of course, a full size CD-ROM wouldn’t have fit, but…

This was definitely fun. For my next project, I’d like to mod a small form-factor (mini-atx) case into the case from my old stereo to make a media PC for the stereo stack. Unfortunately, this involves all new hardware, probably in the neighborhood of $300-400 worth, so it might be a while.

Progress!

Thanks to Greg lending me his Roto-Zip, I’ve actually made progress on my case mod. Yesterday, I marked out all the cuts, and today I cut them all out. In addition, I’ve mounted the motherboard and power supply, and two of the fans (although I’ll have to get bigger screws to properly mount the fans). Still to do are finding a place and mounting style for the hard drive and DVD-rom, and finding a way to secure the graphics card. Now, pictures.

Next, the box with the motherboard, powersupply, and two fans mounted. Note the hard drive sitting on top of the power supply.

Have I mentioned that the fans glow blue?

And finally, the obligatory (don’t ask me why, but it’s always there) picture of the screen running on the modded box.

This has turned out to be a pretty easy project. It has only taken me a couple of hours today to get all this done. Now, it’s not a very “finished” project, so I’m sure I could spend a lot more time on it, and it’s also wood, which is easier to work with than metal, but it’s still remarkably easy. Hopefully, tomorrow I’ll mount the drives, and be done.

Flash solved

I just found the greatest extension for Firebird. It’s called Flash Click to View, and it turns all flash animations into a button. Unless you click the button, the flash doesn’t play. This is great, because it means I can have flash loaded, so I can view if I want/need to, but I don’t get the annoying ads playing all the time in the background. Ain’t open source wonderful?

Golf

I know Janette already blogged about this, but I’m going to also. Oh, and I haven’t read her entry yet.

We went golfing yesterday with Janette’s parents. This was only the second time I’ve ever golfed (not counting driving range), and the first time in over a year that I’ve swung a golf club. On the whole, I did fairly well, and had fun. I think Janette did better than me, tho.

The general breakdown for me is that I can hit short irons really well (I landed almost every short iron on the green), long irons decently (they go straight, but I can’t consistently get them up), and drives/woods go consistantly right, both aim right and slice. So, getting near the green is a problem, but getting on the green is easy. My putting was decent, but not great. I tended to end up short. I even got a par! On the whole, lots of fun.

On a side note, Janette is an amazing driver. Straight and long every time. I’m so jealous.

Damn Ohio

Okay, I knew there was nothing good about Ohio. Now we’re told that the blackout was because of Ohio! We should invade and blow them up, singing “Blame Ohio!” at the top of our lungs!

(Okay, it’s a joke…)

AAA on the drivers side

Apparenly, a city had set up tons of speed traps, so AAA took out this sign to warn drivers:

Power’s back on.

Well, as far as we’re concerned, the Great Power Outage of ‘03 ™ is over. Yesterday, at work, the power flickered and went off. After 10 minutes or so, we decided this was a bit more major than previous blackouts. Information started filtering in (those of us with laptops were still on the internet, as our router and networking infrastructre was UPSed), and we learned that power was out all over the northeast, in a swath from New York to SE Michigan and NE Ohio, right through Canada. At that point, we decided power wasn’t coming back that day, and we left for the bar. Why not home, you ask? Well, everyone and their brother decided to try and go home, and the result was total gridlock, what with no stop lights. (On a side note, the city sent out trucks with generators to power the stop lights in key intersections. This made a huge difference to traffic flow, and extreme kudos go out to the city for thinking of this and carrying it out, rather than redirecting the generators to “other uses”.) So, we sat in the (dark) bar, and drank cold draft beer (cash only), and chatted. It was actually quite relaxing. Oddly enough, cell phones worked fine (for many hours at least), and the internet was fine (if you had battery left in your laptop), but you had to have an ancient land line phone for it to work without power.

At any rate, after the traffic cleared out, I went home, and broke out the million candle-power flashlight and tons of candles. The evening was somewhat boring, although we read some and did a crossword, and watched about 1/3 of Holy Grail (before my laptop died). We ended up going to bed early, sleeping on the floor downstairs to avoid the heat up in the bedroom.

This morning, I went out to see if I could find a place with coffee. I didn’t fine coffee, but it turns out Meijer had a generator, and was selling food. Nothing from the freezers, which were covered with plastic to keep the food from spoiling. But, the credit card machines worked, so I got food. Then, we learned that Janette’s parents had power, so we headed over there. On the way, we discovered that Main Street had power too, so I did manage to get my coffee this morning. (yay!) Spent the day at Janette’s parents, and power came back up here about 4:30 or so. I came home and booted up all the computers and plugged the Tivo back in.

Total loss for the whole event appears to be one graphics card, and some (old) food from the fridge. On the whole, not a huge price to pay for a free day off.

Here you go, an update.

Janette just complained that I never update my blog, so here goes. Blame her.

Did you catch MSBlast? Apparently, it infecting everything in sight, and one of it’s prime characteristics is that you can’t get the update for it, and it disables your virus scanner. Not fun at all.

Our IT staff at work was going nuts about patching the hole it explits a week ago, and work is behind a firewall, so we generally don’t have to worry about it.

It’s times like this that I’m glad I don’t run Windows.
