Freedom (or whatever)
I feel myself somewhat cut adrift.
For the past 10 years or so, I’ve been a Denver fan. Don’t as me why, I’ve just liked Denver for more than any other team. A big part of that was John Elway. I think he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Then, after he retired, they made Griese starter. Now, I loved Griese at U of M, and not just because of the National Championship. He had great presence, and always made the right decisions. He wasn’t a great skill, but he did the right thing so often that he was a great quarterback. So, when Denver picked him up, I was happy, and when he started, I was extatic. Although he had lots of problems at Denver, mostly due to injuries, when he was on the field he did well. Now, he’s gone, and I definitely feel the loss. There’s still some great players that I really like on Denver, such as McCaffery, Sharpe, Portis, Gold, and so on, but it’s somehow not the same. Partly, it’s because of who they picked up: Jake Plummer.
I really don’t like Jake Plummer. Partly, it’s because he hasn’t performed well, even though he’s been hyped. Partly, it’s the stupid “Jake the Snake” nickname. Partly, it’s because he’s been on Arizona, who I also don’t like. But, the end result is that I don’t like Plummer. I’ll still root for Denver when they’re playing, say, the Colts, but I probably won’t root for them over Oakland or the Packers.
This leaves me without “a team”. I’ve never been a Lions fan, and, although I’m moderately interested to see what Mariucci does with the team, I’m not going to start now. I’ve always liked Green Bay (especially Bret Favre), and recently I’ve liked Oakland, but neither of them is “my team”. I’m finally to the place I’ve sort of been heading for the past few years: I like many specific players, and some teams that have more players I like than others, and I dislike specific players and some teams, but I don’t have any particular team to root for week in and week out. Maybe I should take up fantasy football.
