Why a hole?

So, Saddam supposedly had high-tech gadgets, underground networks, photoshopped doubles, billions of dollers (he had over $750,000 on him when he was captured). He was rumored to be in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Afganistan, and several other countries. My question is, why was he in a hole outside Bagdad?
He could have been hiding in (relative) luxury somewhere else, anywhere else, in the world. He could have gotten plastic surgery and been relatively free. But no, he dove into a hole under a farm. I’m flabbergasted.
