Stupid Announcers

What’s up with the ESPN announcers? Do they hate the Red Wings? I mean, during the first period, the Red Wings completely dominated. They came out in the second, did really well, and scored. Then, the game bogged down and became pretty even. The announcers, however, are acting like Calgery is dominating just because Detroit isn’t. Are they even watching the same game I am?

You Ann Arbor dwellers have no idea how lucky you are to have the Daniels & Redmond (or Redmond fill-in) broadcast for the entire regular season. They’re far better than the local announcers for most teams, and the ESPN announcers are no exception. Have you noticed that Gary Thorne sees one of the jersey numbers and randomly plugs in a player who fits? He’s confused Schneider with Draper (and was wondering aloud what Schneider was doing behind the Flames net); Hull with Dandy (gee, when did Dandy shave off his (brunette) playoff beard and dye the rest of his hair blond), Maltby with Yzerman, to name a few.
My theory on the announcers: they’ve been told to make the game seem exciting any way they can, which means trying to make the Wings and Flames seem equal any way they can so that the outcome seems in doubt. Which of course is stupid. It’s a playoff hockey game; it’s in doubt right up to the last buzzer.
