So, they’ve finished the section of Main St. between Ann-Arbor Saline and the mall. I have to drive this strech of road every day to and from work, so I have a little tiny bit of experience with the traffic patterns on it.
Before they repaved it, it was two lanes in each direction, with no turn lane. On the AAS end, it widened out to five lanes, with a left turn lane at the light for turning on to AAS. At the Eisenhower end, it did much the same thing, with a dedicated left turn lane. The traffic flow was generally pretty good. People turned left a lot, but it didn’t matter, because there was two lanes. During rush hour, the traffic was fairly heavy, and both lanes were generally fairly full. The single most sticky spot was going from the mall toward AAS, right before the street widened. There’s an entrance to the little strip mall there, and that same entrance serves a huge apartment complex. During rush hour, the left lane there was always backed way up with people trying to turn left into that entrance. It largely didn’t matter to people going straight, as they just used the right lane.
Fast forward to now. They’ve reduced the entire length that was two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, with a left turn lane. This generally won’t cause a problem, except for two (three) things.
1) At both ends, there is two lanes in each direction, plus a turn lane, just like before. That means that traffic entering this section of Main st. has to merge down from two to one lane, in both directions. This causes problems.
1.5) At the AAS end, rather than the two lanes just merging down, the right lane is turn only into the stripmall/apt. complex. This is nuts, because there’s two left turn lanes feeding into that section. It causes even more problems than the other end, and makes is really hard to turn out of that stripmall.
2) There is no left turn lane turning into the stripmall/apt. complex! This means that, during rush hour, traffic just backs up!
The result of this whole deal is that traffic sucks. They’ve made things much much worse than it was before. Thus, my conclusion that road designers in Ann Arbor are complete morons who never actually drive here.
