Well, we did it. We’ve switched from SprintPCS to Cingular. Thanks to the FCC’s mandate of number portability, it was remarkably painless. We just went into the store, picked phones and a service plan, and walked out half an hour later (they had to program the phones) with working phones. Very simple.
We got the Sony-Ericsson Z500a phone:

We like the solidity of the phone, and we like the size, and the features. They’re camera phones, but we don’t really care a whole lot about that. They play mp3’s, including as ring tones, so we can literally have any ring tone we want. Pretty cool. No bluetooth, but we don’t really care about that. All in all, the two phones together cost us $50 (we got the 2-year agreement). Even with activation and charges, switching to Cingular and buying two phones cost us less than a single phone would have at Sprint, even if we’d signed a 2-year agreement there. Plus, we’ll end up saving $5/month. Not bad.
The first time you come out of the coffee shop to see someone checking out your new car.
So, I have an update. I’ve discovered that there are a few in-dash DVD players (without screens) that can play MP3s off of DVDs. That’s very attractive, because 4+ GB of MP3s is a lot of music. I’d have to transcode/burn on the fly, but it’s a damn site better than MP3s on CD. Also, they’re relatively cheap (<$200), but I’d likely have to get one installed, and I’ve so far only found them online. So, we’ll see…
(I’m not sure what kind of funky burning I’d have to do to get it to work…)
So, I’m vaguely in the market for a built-in mp3 player for my car. Ideally, I’d get a Rio Car (formerly known as an Empeg), but they were discontinued when Rio was aquired by S3 and then split up. Now, if you’re lucky, you can find one on ebay for tons of money. There aren’t really any viable alternatives out there. iRiver is supposedly going to start producing these some time, but all anyone knows about that is a press release from a month ago that they’re finishing a fab to build chips for them.
So, here’s my list of non-negotiable requirements.
And, here’s my list of bonuses.
Here’s my use cases for an in-car mp3 player.
In general, what I want out of my car mp3 player is to “Just Work*” It should be optimized for playing all my music randomly, because that’s what I most want it to do. It should be capable of playing a particular artist, album, or song, because that’s the other way I play music. It should be able to pause it’s random list and come back to it, because I most care about the random list. It should start when the car starts, and stop when it stops. It should be preempted by the CD player, the same way the radio is now. If someone was to come up with this, I’d be willing to pay 50% more than I would pay for an equivilent portable player, although it should be possilbe to make them cheeper, due to the lack of a size requirement. Please? Someone?

This is amazing. It’s a set of mechanical logic gates (and, or, not, nand, nor, and flip flop) created out of legos. Bravo!
Well, it’s official. Sprint bought Nextel today. However, I’m not going to go looking for a new carrier immediately; There are rumours that Verison is going to buy Sprint, which would result in Cingluar (bought AT&T), Verision (bought Sprint bought Nextel), and T-Mobile, which would be the little guy. I’m not sure who to go with at that point…
Apparently, Google is putting the entire U of M library online in searchable form! This is truely amazing, and has been a long-time hope of mine, as the capabilities of computers and the Internet has increased. Imagine being able to search for just about anything at all in a full University libarary at any time from any place… Yum. Bravo U of M and Google!
Edit -
Apparently, the agreement is also with Harvard, and some other institutions. Better and better!
Today, it was announced that Sprint and Nextel have agreed to a merger. I’m not sure that I can have service from a company that includes Nextel, on the general principal that their walkie-talkie service is the single most annoying and rude thing ever invented in the history of mankind. So, we may be looking for a new provider…
That Verizion/AT&T merger looks interesting. They have the stupid “Can you hear me now?” commercials, which I hate, but not much more than the commercials of all the other cellular companies. So, I guess we’ll see.
Today, I bought a new car.

I really love it. It absolutely sticks to the road, even in the rain, and when I step on the gas, it actually goes! It has the greatest sightlines of any car I’ve ever been in. There are a very few minor annoyances, but I’m overall extremely happy with it.
