So, I have an update. I’ve discovered that there are a few in-dash DVD players (without screens) that can play MP3s off of DVDs. That’s very attractive, because 4+ GB of MP3s is a lot of music. I’d have to transcode/burn on the fly, but it’s a damn site better than MP3s on CD. Also, they’re relatively cheap (<$200), but I’d likely have to get one installed, and I’ve so far only found them online. So, we’ll see…

(I’m not sure what kind of funky burning I’d have to do to get it to work…)
