Well, we did it. We’ve switched from SprintPCS to Cingular. Thanks to the FCC’s mandate of number portability, it was remarkably painless. We just went into the store, picked phones and a service plan, and walked out half an hour later (they had to program the phones) with working phones. Very simple.
We got the Sony-Ericsson Z500a phone:

We like the solidity of the phone, and we like the size, and the features. They’re camera phones, but we don’t really care a whole lot about that. They play mp3′s, including as ring tones, so we can literally have any ring tone we want. Pretty cool. No bluetooth, but we don’t really care about that. All in all, the two phones together cost us $50 (we got the 2-year agreement). Even with activation and charges, switching to Cingular and buying two phones cost us less than a single phone would have at Sprint, even if we’d signed a 2-year agreement there. Plus, we’ll end up saving $5/month. Not bad.
