Usenet has made me a lazy typist
Hanging out on IRC for Gentoo and Gnome has made me a lazy typist, it seems. I’ve pretty much stopped checking my typing for correctness as I type. I attribute this to two things: Spellcheck in gaim (which is what I use for IRC), and the ability to correct myself after reading my post. Example:
I just posted in a bug:
Could you pose the output of lspci?
When I read the bug email, I had this urge to go and post:
post, even.
which is, of course, what I would have done on IRC, if I’d made the same mistake. What I should have done was to read over my post before I submitted it. It’s what I would have done before I started using a medium where I could easily correct myself after the fact.
Makes me wonder: how long before I can’t type english correctly without spellcheck and correcting myself after-the-fact? C, of course, will never be a problem… The compiler can catch my mistakes. ![]()
Yeah, I have that problem at work. I know there will be at least two editors reading my work before it actually ends up in the newspaper. Of course, I should still proofread my own work before sending it to them, just to save them some work, but I don’t always. When writing e-mail or whatnot, I sometimes forget that there aren’t two editors likely to catch any mistakes I make.
