Walls are easy

As you may or may not know, depending on how long you’ve been reading, we have a new daughter due in ~1.5 months. This means a little re-organization is necessary in our house.

Right now, there are 2 bedrooms on the main floor: the big one is the computer room, and the little one is Morgan’s room. However, Keira will need a room in the not-too-distant future, so Morgan needs to vacate her room, so Keira can have it. This means moving the computers. So, I’m building a room in the basement to be the new computer room/office.

Over the weekend, I put up 2 stud walls. It’s the first time I’ve ever done stud walls, and my suspicion was confirmed: it’s quite easy. Kinda hard on the hammering arm, of course, but otherwise pretty easy. Of course, those were the easy walls; the hard walls (the ones going around the vents in the ceiling) are next, so maybe I’ll be singing a different tune next week.

At any rate, once the walls are up, I can start wiring for electrical and ethernet. Once that’s done, I can put up drywall (which I *have* done before), after which I can put in the floor, after which I can move in the computers, after which Morgan can be moved, after which Keira gets her room. Whew! Lucky for me, Keira will be in our room for a couple of months, so I don’t have to be done immediately.

In and around all this, I have to build a new file server (yay for dying hard drives/IDE chains…) and try to resurrect our TiVo (I never realized how much we used that thing… and how *useless* normal television is…) and build a router, so I can set up the IPv6 tunnel. Nothing much. Oh, and work is quite busy too.

I wonder if I’ll have any free time in the next couple of months?

  1. May I just say that your daughters have very cool names. We’re considering Morgan though our radar should be quite clear of babies for a while… we hope!

  2. Wow. I’m exhausted just reading your list of tasks… and this is coming from someone who did a cross-country move just a few months ago.
