Books: Fluff vs. Literature

Okay, so I was reading this fantasy book, the second in a trilogy. While it’s a really good book, I’ve been really really slow getting through it. Basically, I’ve only read it while waiting at restaurants, and haven’t felt any urge to just sit and read for any period of time. Then, a couple days ago I started reading Artemis Fowl, which is a “young adult” kind of book, and I could hardly put it down. The main difference between the two books is that the first one is serious. It has a lot of imagery and things like that (not so much that it’s boring, but enough that it seems like “literature” instead of just a book.) Now, I like literature. I’ve read lots of old or famous books and enjoyed them. In general, though, I only tend to get really into books that are less literary. I think it’s because a lot of the more literary books focus more on the words and the imagry and the subtextual messages and less on the story, and what really captures my attention is a good story. Sometimes it’s the plot that’s really intriguing, and sometimes it’s the characters. Ideally, all books would be fun, have good stories, and use fancy words and have literary value. Since that’s never going to happen, I think I’m just going to continue to read a lot of fluff (like Buffy books) with the occasional piece of literature thrown in.
