Mars

This morning, sometime around 5ish, Mars was the closest it’s been to the Earth in some really long amount of time. We went out last night to look at it. Basically, if you look up in the sky and there’s this really bright, kind of reddish star — that’s Mars. I decided to take a picture of it (even if that is a bit silly) since it’s never going to be so close again.
Here is the picture of Mars taken with my camera:

And here is one taken by the Hubble telescope:

Mine’s better, don’t you think?

I got my game

Yay! The Buffy game was in today! As soon as I finish work I’m going to play it. Probably really badly, though.

No Buffy Game

So I went to the store today to buy the new Buffy game, which was supposed to be out today. It wasn’t. Apparently, it SHIPS today, but they won’t actually have it until tomorrow. So now I have to go back tomorrow. What I want to know is: what’s the point of announcing the ship date of a game? If you’re going to say, “It’ll be out on such-and-such a day”, then such-and-such a day ought to be the day it’s actually in the stores! Grr.

Fantasy Football

It’s started again. I just had my draft. Not a very good one, either. I was dead last for picking, so it meant that I had to pick twice in a row every time and had to sit watching while everyone else took all my possible next picks. Oh well. Maybe all the good people on the other teams will get hurt and then I’ll win. We’ll see.

Jenny

So, my parents are on their way to New York with Diana to get her all set up for school and stuff. That means that Jenny is here staying with me and Dan for the weekend. I think she’s already getting bored, though, because I’ve been doing work, so I haven’t been able to pay attention to her. She’s playing with my beanie babies now, so hopefully that will keep her occupied for a while. She’s going to get really annoyed when we start watching football…

Golf

Me and Dan went and played 18 holes of golf with my parents this afternoon. I’m not very good. However, I hadn’t played since I was like 12, and I hadn’t even hit a ball in over a year, so all things considered I did pretty well. I got so that I was driving really, really well by the end. I didn’t have nearly so much success with everything else, though. I hit a couple of good bunker shots, too, but that was really about it. Most of the rest of my shots weren’t very good. I need to learn to putt, too. I have a hard time telling if the green is sloped or not and how I should hit the ball and stuff. But it was fun, and I think if I actually practiced I could get pretty decent. I can get a good set of golf clubs for my birthday, and then I can practice and get good.

Blackout!

Well, that was fun. Or at least interesting. I was in Detroit when the power went out — gee, didn’t I just pick the best day to go into work? Anyway, the lights started flickering crazily, so I unplugged my laptop, but otherwise ignored it. A little later the lights came back on and my work desktop started booting up again. Partway through the boot, the lights went nuts again, and this time they stayed off. They started evacuating the building, so we all had to climb down tons of stairs (20 floors in my case.) Along the way we ran into a guy whose keys were stuck on the other side of the building who was trying to go down and over and then back up so he could get to them (I think he managed to find his way), and we also learned there was someone stuck in one of the elevators. By the time we reached the 11th floor, where the stuck person was, some building people were there. I guess they eventually managed to get the person out, which was good. Anyway, we went all the way down the stairs, and then I got to stand around while the “Disaster Planning Team” had a meeting. Some guy from the Detroit Free Press came and took a whole bunch of pictures of us and wrote down all our names, so maybe my picture got in the paper. I don’t know because I didn’t actually get a copy of the Free Press. Anyway, we waited there until around 7:00 (the power outage came not long after 4:00), waiting for the traffic to clear and stuff. A couple of the guys were nice enough to climb back up the stairs to get drinks for all of us (though I had already grabbed some Sprite on the 19th floor.) Anyway, once we finally left Detroit the highway had cleared enough that we had no problems on the way home. Me and Dan sat around reading and doing a crossword puzzle and stuff by candlelight last night. I had to eat a bagel with peanut butter for dinner because it was the only thing we had in the house. It was really, really quiet without any of the computers or anything making noise. It was also really hot, so we slept downstairs on the floor because it was cooler than the bedroom. We still didn’t have power this morning, but my parents did, so we went over there for a while. Part of downtown also had power by the time we went over there, so Dan was able to get his coffee from Espresso Royalle. Anyway, we have power again now, so I can do everything I couldn’t before, like get email (though I don’t actually have any.)
Here’s a couple of the pictures I took in Detroit of everyone standing around outside the building and stuff.

no meteors (again)

I guess there’s another meteor shower tonight. This time it’s not cloudy, but we can’t see anything because of the full moon. I never get to see the meteor showers. Dan thought maybe he saw a meteor, but I didn’t see anything. On the plus side, the moon looked really cool, and we got to see Mars, too. It’s near the moon right now and the 2nd brightest thing in the sky, apparently. (It looks like a red star.) Someone’s werewolf (okay, okay, dog) was barking the whole time we were outside, which was kind of annoying.

Are you ready for some football?

The first Monday Night Football game of the season is going on now. Granted, it’s on ESPN instead of ABC and it’s at 8 instead of 9 because it’s preseason, but the important thing is that football is back. The summer is so boring, with nothing to watch but baseball. Oh, here’s the kickoff for the second half, so I’m going to watch now. (Though, I don’t care too much since I’m not interested in either of these teams, and I don’t have any fantasy football players to follow yet.)

Pictures!

The website with the Disney pictures has been made, so you can now see our pictures as well as our comments on them. There will also be a page for the few little videos we took, and there will be a link to that from the Disney Pictures page. (That’s not ready yet, though.)

Go here to see the pictures.
