Happy Halloween

I mean, I always kind of knew diamonds were a scam, but I never really realized just how ridiculous and manufactured the whole diamond culture was until I read this. It makes me even happier that I don’t have a diamond. This article was written in 1982, but obviously the diamond market is still operating the same way 20 years later. My recommendation: don’t waste your money.
I have a piano!
It’s my birthday present, so really it’s a bit early, but I normally never get my presents on my birthday anyway, so that’s nothing new. Anyway, it’s a Yamaha Portable Grand Digital Piano, which basically means it’s a keyboard, but one that’s full-sized and feels really nice. And all the weird keyboard buttons and settings are fun to play with. It also has a floppy drive, so if I ever record songs (not sure how likely that is), I can save them on disk and put them on my computer and stuff. It’s a lot like Diana’s Clavinova, only smaller and not as fancy. So it’s really cool and I’m going to have lots of fun playing with it, and I will finally be able to get back into playing the piano.
Here is the first picture of our baby. I should probably say something more about it, but I don’t really know what to say, so you can just look at the picture.

So, Homecoming was Saturday. This meant that I had to get up at 5:45 in the morning so that I could go and march with Alumni Band. It was very early. But I had fun anyway. The new turf in the stadium is REALLY nice. It’s not at all hard, like old turf. It really feels springy when you step on it, like real grass. Unlike real grass, however, it’s nice and even and not full of holes or muddy or anything. We got to play Calyptors (Calypso version of The Victors), which made me very happy. I’d been wanting to play that song again for a long time. Hopefully we can play it in pep band this year too. It was kind of cold in the morning, and it looked like it might rain, but eventually the sun came out and it turned into a nice day. The game was good, too. We won 56 to 14, and several of the touchdowns were down in our end zone (pretty much everything else I had to watch on the big screen.) So, to end this kind of rambling entry, here is a picture of some funny food from Michigan Stadium. Apparently instead of popcorn, we now have “Popped Maize”.

I was just reading this thing online by these crazy people who think Halloween is evil and want their poor kids to be scarred for life by having to pass out religious pamphlets instead of going trick-or-treating. Anyway, it was rather silly. This was my favorite line: “The celebration has its roots with ancient Druids, high priests of the Celtic religion who practiced ritual human sacrifice. It evolved through cultures and centuries, but remains a high holy day focused on supernatural evil and slaughter.” Talk about over-reacting! Guess those people wouldn’t like my pumpkins and witch lights and giant skeleton.
(Or this little devil smiley.)
That was unbelievable. After looking absolutely horrid thoughout most of the first 3 quarters of the game, we (Michigan) managed a brilliant 4th quarter comeback to defeat Minnesota 38-35. I think John Navarre turned into John Elway or something. Well, not really, but he didn’t choke when it really mattered! What a weird game. It’s hard to believe we scored 31 points in the 4th quarter. It’s also hard to believe that we won by a field goal. Although apparently Rivas (our new field goal kicker this year) is actually 6 for 7 for the season. Which actually isn’t bad. So maybe our kicking isn’t as terrible as it seemed. Anyway, it was a crazy game which probably would have been a lot better if I had only watched the 4th quarter. But, whatever. As long as we won.
Exercise is good for you, sure, but don’t overdo it. You don’t want to end up like this guy.

Well, that was an exciting start to the Red Wings season. They started off well, getting a powerplay goal in the first period. But then the Kings came back, scoring two kind of strange goals to take the lead with only 4 minutes or so left in the game. However, Datsyuk scored a goal on another powerplay (yay!) to tie the game. I wasn’t paying a whole lot of attention after that, assuming it would go to overtime (and also distracted by the food I was making), and so I completely missed Yzerman winning the game with only 1.7 seconds left. Good thing there’s instant replay. Anyway, it was pretty cool and a good way to start the season.
So, I went to Iowa over the weekend, for that thing that we will not speak of. Anyway, the trip wasn’t too bad. I had fun for the most part, and it was cool to see the Iowa stadium and stuff. (The stadium was pretty boring, though.) It is definitely true that there’s nothing in Iowa but corn. The entire way along the highway was basically nothing but corn fields. At the welcome center rest stop there was this weird corn sculpture. It wasn’t entirely corn. There’s like a pig head and other stuff like that in it. But it’s very strange at any rate.

There was this really cool fountain in downtown Iowa City. The water shot out in these arches, and you could walk through it without getting wet.
