House Update

So, this morning we met with the realtor again, to put in an offer on that house that we liked. We offered a little less than the asking price, but not too much. Later on in the day, I got a call saying that someone else was making an offer, too. This was worrying because I was convinced that this other person was going to offer way more than us and “steal” our house. Well, I guess that didn’t happen, because the seller accepted our offer! Yay! So now we have to do things like get inspectors to look the place over to make sure there’s nothing horribly wrong with it, like it’s about to collapse or it’s been taken over by termites or something (I really doubt there will be any problems, though. The current owners seem to have taken really good care of the place.) We called around to lenders today, and we shouldn’t have any trouble getting the loan, which is the other big thing to do. Once that stuff is done, it will just be a matter of waiting until closing. I’m very excited now. This whole house buying thing is kind of crazy and fun at the same time.

House Hunting

So, for those of you who don’t know, we’re actually seriously looking for a house now — as in, we have a realtor and everything. We looked at the house listings with the realtor the other day and narrowed down the houses in our price range to less than 20. She printed up the information sheets from those houses for us, and then later on we went through them and picked the ones that were the most interesting to us and marked them as houses we’d like to look at. Today we went out and bought a newspaper (since we’re like the only people in the city who don’t actually GET a newspaper…) to look for open houses. It turned out that a couple of the houses on our list were open, so we went out to look at them.

One of the houses we loved. It’s a story-and-a-half, with 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths, and it has a garage and a full basement (both things we really want.) It also has a nice back yard and a great location (West Side, between Miller and Dexter, and only a block from a park.) The upstairs is a master suite, with the bedroom and a full bath (with a nice shower) and lots of closet space, and then the other bedrooms are downstairs. The only problem is that it doesn’t have central air. It does have a wall unit in the upstairs, though, which is better than nothing. It’s a really great little house, and the current owners apparently love it, but one of them got a job at UCLA, so they’re moving to California.

The other house was nice in terms of features (garage, basement) and looked nice on the outside, despite being a ranch (a brick one.) Also, the layout inside was nice and it had 3 bedrooms and everything like that. However, the current owner had rather, um, interesting, decorating tastes. The main entrance is into the living room. We walked in and immediately noticed that the wall all around the fireplace was mirrored. We both basically thought, “well, we don’t like those mirrors, but they could be taken down.” Then we walked into the dining room. The entire room was mirrored, save for the window and the half-wall with the kitchen. Then, in the kitchen, there was another mirrored wall. Each of the bedrooms had a huge floor-to-ceiling mirror. Also one of the bedrooms was this really awful shade of bright green. Even the basement was weird, having been finished all in white with yet more mirrors. It was so strange. The dining room was the worst. It was so disorienting, that we kept thinking there were other rooms coming off of it, and I felt like I was going to accidentally walk into a wall or something.

So, as you can probably guess, we’re not going to get the mirror house. It would take way too much interior work to make it presentable. The other house, though, is already great on the inside, and we are very interested. I’ll keep you updated as the house hunt develops.

Weird Flower, again

Remember how way back when I had a post about this strange 3-foot wide flower that smelled like rotting meat? Well, one is about to bloom at the University of Connecticut. You can read about it here. I doubt anyone wants to go to Connecticut and actually smell the thing, but there is a webcam for it in case anyone is interested.

Happy Birthday Morgan

Today Morgan is .083333… years old. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate, because the number of days in a month varies, but for our purposes we will assume months of equal length. Anyway, Morgan is a month old today. It’s gone by very quickly. (Must be that lack of sleep thing.) So happy 1-month birthday to Morgan.

DDR

Dance Dance Revolution has got to be one of the best video games ever invented. It’s totally addictive. I just got it yesterday, and I already want to keep playing it all the time. Plus, it’s a great aerobic exercise. I think this is wonderful, because I hate exercising. It’s so boring. Playing DDR, though, provides good exercise while being fun! So now I can lose the weight from being pregnant and be healthy and enjoy it. And Morgan likes music, so it doesn’t bother her or wake her up when I play. The only real downside that I can see is that I’m going to get the songs stuck in my head all the time.
